eruvAy karuvAy

Like a speck of manure and as a foetus in the womb,

thanilE uruvAy

a human form was taken, and

idhuvE payirAy viLaivAgi

that developed into a full-grown body.

ivarpOy avarAy

Those who were present yesterday are gone tomorrow;

avarpOy ivarAy

and those who died yesterday are born again today.

idhuvE thodarbAy veRipOla

This cycle goes on and on like mad.

oruthAy iruthAy pala kOdiyathAy

Searching for one mother, two mothers and a million mothers (in innumerable births),

udanE avamAy azhiyAdhE

and then decaying as a total waste - this I do not want.

orukAl murugA paramA kumarA uyir kAvena Odha

At least once, I should be able to implore "MurugA! The Supreme One! Kumara! Save me" -

aruL thArAy

You only can grant me that attitude.

murugAvena Ortharam OdhadiyAr

If Your devotees say MurugA once,

mudimEl iNaithAL aruLvOnE

You grant the grace of placing Your two feet on their head.

munivOr amarOr muRaiyO enavE

When the sages and the DEvAs screamed at Your feet saying "Is this (SUran's tyranny) fair?",

mudhusUrura mEl vidum vElA

You threw Your Spear to pierce the heart of SUran.

thirumAl biramA aRiyAdhavar

Vishnu and BrahmA could not fathom the feet nor find the head of SivA;

seersiRuvA thirumAl marugOnE

You are that SivA's son and Vishnu's nephew.

sezhu mA madhil sEr

Surrounded by strong fortresses and

azhagAr pozhil sUzh

encircled by beautiful groves is the town,

thiru veezhiyil vAzh perumALE.

Thiruveezhimizhalai* which is Your abode, Oh Great One!
