vadhana sarOruga nayana sileemuka vaLLi

VaLLi has a lotus face and eyes like arrows;

punaththil nindru vArAy padhi kAdhang kAdharai

You went to her millet-field and said "Come over to me. Your town (VaLLimalai) is just 25 miles away from my town (ThiruththaNigai).

ondrumUrum vayalu morEvidai

Both of our hometowns are so close to each other that there is only a millet-field in between them"

enavoru kAvidai vallabam atrazhindhu

Thus You spoke to her in that grove where You surrendered all Your strength.

mAlAy madalERung kAmuka embirAnE

You were so enchanted with VaLLi that You were ready to climb the "madal"*, Oh my Lord!

idhaviya kANivai thadhaiyena vEduvan

The hunter (Kannappan) offered food saying that it was very sweet;

eydhidum echchil thindru leelAchalam Adum

and after taking a bite by himself, he then offered the food that was gladly accepted by Him (Lord SivA) who cast a magic spell on the hunter (with bleeding eye).

thUyavan maindha

You are the Son of that pure SivA!

nALum iLaiyava

You remain forever youthful;

mUdhurai malaikizha vOnena

(at the same time) the ancient work in Tamil (ThirumurugAtRuppadai) calls You the old man of the mountains!

veLLa menak kalandhu

When You are worshipped ardently in a big way,

nURAyira bEdham jAtham ozhindhavAdhAn

millions of births** are destroyed. This is indeed a miracle!

gadhaigana chApa thigiri vaLai vALodu kaivasi viththa

He holds in His hands five different weapons; GowthamOthaki as the mace, the great SArangam as the bow, Sudharsanam as the wheel, PAnchajanyam as the Conch and NAndhakam as the sword;

nandhagOpAla mageepan dhEvi magizhndhuvAzha

Yasodhai, the consort of King NandagOpan, was delighted

kayiRod ulUkalam uruLa ulAviya kaLvan

when the grinding stone to which she tied Him was dragged by the famous butter thief;

aRap payandhu AgAya kapAlam peeRa nimirndhuneeLa

He grew terrifyingly upto the sky piercing it with His head;

vitharaNa mAvali veruva mahAvrutha veLLa veLukka nindra

(before that) He stood innocently in front of the benevolent Emperor MahAbali as pious little VAmanan seeking alms;

nArAyaNa mAman sEyai munindhakOvE

and He is Your Uncle NarAyaNan! You lost Your temper with His son, BrahmA, Oh Lord!

viLai vayalUdidai vaLaiviLai yAdiya

Amid the fertile paddy field, there are plenty of conch shells in this place,

veLLinagark amarndha vElAyudha

called VeLLinagar (VeLLigaram***), which is Your abode, Oh Lord of the Spear!

mEvun dhEvargaL thambiRAnE.

You are the Master of all the DEvAs worshipping You!
